Case Study – Seddon & Sons Ltd

The problem:

One of the produce industry’s leading leek growers approached Tri-pack with a problem they were facing with their packaging. The packaging they were using was costly, cumbersome and not an environmentally friendly option.

With the desire to grow and innovate the business, their existing packaging was not ticking all the boxes it needed to for them. Their packaging needed to enhance the quality of their produce, be cheaper than their current packaging, be more sustainable and allow them to stand out from their competition. With so many boxes to tick, to bring their produce packaging to where they needed it to be, they sought the help of Tri-pack…

Working with Tri-pack:

The basic requirements for Seddon & Sons were simple – the packaging needed to be strong to hold large quantities of leeks, waterproof to hold the moisture from the fresh produce and made from a food safe material.

With our own in-house design teams and production facilities, the first step was to produce prototypes for Seddon & Sons so they could see first hand the high-quality, 100% recyclable packaging solution.

Working closely with Seddon & Sons throughout the process, once the prototypes were successfully trialled, we were then able to create unique tooling to seal the edges of the packaging to create a barrier for dust and moisture – also creating insulating properties too, meaning the leeks are kept cooler for longer.

Furthermore with our AA+ BRC accreditation, one huge plus point for food production and the fresh produce sector, is that our packaging is food safe and meets the required standard for the food industry and Seddon & Son.

The outcome:

Working exclusively with polypropylene, we were able to work closely with Seddon & Son to create an outcome that not only worked, but exceeded expectations too.

Enhanced the quality of product
Using 100% moisture resistant material, with the capability to seal the edges and eliminate dirt and contamination, our box solution allowed for the packing of boxes in a wet environment to allow for greater freshness – therefore enhancing the product.

Stand out from competition
Seddon & Sons utilised Tri-pack’s in-house printing capabilities, to showcase their crisp new logo on all their leek boxes. Incorporating their branding paid dividends for Seddon & Sons with them seeing increased growth of their products as a result.

Sustainability
Using polypropylene, Tri-pack provided a 100% recyclable box solution, that requires no specialist recycling, and can be disposed of in everyday domestic recycling streams. Furthermore, with our unique flat-packed packaging design, the requirement for inbound deliveries is greatly reduced – having a significant reduction in their carbon footprint too.

Additional benefits
The quantities of packaging involved allowed both parties to arrange for a machine to be situated onsite at Seddon & Sons which could allow the for them to produce their own boxes on demand. This allowed for greater management of stock and reduced warehouse storage and ultimately costs.
